Steady Ride 10 – Off road ride on the lines

The aim of the Steady Ride for 11 October was to get away from the usual road based ride and try something different, so Seven riders took to the Railway Paths on a dry but overcast Sunday morning.

Quite a range of machinery turned up: Ray Haldane, Richard Ritz and Joe O’Neil on mountain bikes, Paddy Collins and Mal Gray on CX bikes, Stu Cook on a slick shod road bike, and Chapeau to Newcomer Scott Taylor who got stuck in on a full suss mtb.

The route took us from Chester-le-Street up the C2C route to Leadgate, a short road link to the Derwent Walk which we then followed to Swalwell for a well deserved coffee stop at Pedalling Squares.  We picked up the cycle path which skirts the Metrocentre and winds it’s way up to Whickham, before taking a short road link onto the Tanfield Railway Path.  This took us to Birkland Lane where we used a final road link back to the C2C at High Hold which gave us the run-in back to Chester-le-Street.

The tracks were in decent condition, despite heavy rain earlier in the week, so even cleaning the bike afterwards was a straightforward job!  Thanks to everyone who turned out and especially to Stu for pictures and video.
